Beneath the Kantor range there is no sky and no north. The Endeemites have lived for three thousand years inside a vast karst network — chambers the size of cathedrals lit by phosphor walls, cultivated lichens, and the slow gold of salamander-fat lamps. They do not draw maps. They carve them, in low relief, registering volume and echo and warmth where other cartographers would mark a coastline.
The Council's official chart of these caverns is a polite, two-dimensional lie. The Masters of Stone know it. They have been waiting a long time to be asked the right question.
